Live Blog: Ypsilanti City Council convenes following city manager resignation

This is a live blog for the Ypsilanti City Council meeting on Tuesday, March 19 at 7 p.m. Posting will begin an hour before the event and updates will take place throughout the weekend.

The Rundown

  • This meeting comes over a week after former City Manager Darwin McClary resigned.
  • McClary faced backlash for hiring a white fire chief from Novi instead of hiring a black chief who had served with the Ypsilanti Fire Department for more than 30 years.
  • An emergency meeting was held on Thursday, March 7 where Frances McMullan, the former city clerk, was appointed to replace McClary.
  • The meeting will feature a constituents forum, where Ypsilanti residents will be allowed to speak their concerns directly to the city council and mayor.
  • Mayor Beth Bashert will lead the meeting. Mayor Pro-Tem Lois Richardson and other council members will be in attendance. McMullan is expected to attend
  • The agenda will be posted 30 minutes before the meeting on Tuesday.

  • The results from the Peninsular Dam Survey will be shared with the council.
  • Public comment will allow constituents to share any information with the mayor and council.
  • An ordinance that would limit the number of firearms sold within city limits will be discussed.
